Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is an annual Twenty20 cricket tournament which was inaugurated in 2008. The format involves franchisees (currently 8) competing for the title. The games are usually played between April and June, in India (with one exception: The 2009 edition was played in South Africa due to security concerns at the time of General Elections in India).[1] It is currently supervised by BCCI Vice-President Ranjib Biswal, who serves as the League's chairman and Commissioner.[2] Sundar Raman has been the IPL chief operating officer (COO) since its first season, after he was appointed by the former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modiin 2008.[3]
The IPL is the most-watched Twenty20 league in the world and is also known for its commercial success. During the seventh season (2014), the Indian Premier League's brand value was estimated to be around US$3.2 billion.[4]
It is currently sponsored by Pepsi and thus officially known as the Pepsi Indian Premier League.[5]
Though the Indian Super League had the highest average attendance of all sports leagues in India in 2014, it was followed by theIndian Premier League in second place.
Live rights to the event are syndicated around the globe, and in 2010, IPL became the first sporting event to be broadcast live on YouTube. [6]
Of the 11 teams to have competed since it's inception, five have won the title: Kolkata Knight Riders (2), Chennai Super Kings (2),Rajasthan Royals (1), Deccan Chargers (1), and Mumbai Indians (1). The current champions are the Kolkata Knight Riders, who won the 2014 season by beating the Kings XI Punjab by 3 wickets.
